    Anne Frank:

Tracing Some of Her Forebears Back 600 Years

    Speaker: Karen S. Franklin

    Sunday January 11th 2026

    9:30 AM – 10:00 AM Mountain Time

    Schmear, Schmooze, and Share

    10 AM Program begins

    on ZOOM

To understand Anne Frank’s family, identified widely as a Frankfurt family that fled to Amsterdam in the 1930s, one needs a more detailed study of Anne’s “annecestors” who lived throughout Germany in prior centuries. In this talk, Karen S. Franklin delves into this history. The talk will divulge details about Anne's forebears, including Rabbi Abraham Frank, and colorful stories such as a practical joke played in the 1600s by another ancestor of Anne's, recorded in the memoirs of Glueckl of Hameln. The shocking discovery of the fate of Anne’s forebears some 600 years before she was murdered casts her fate in the larger context of Jewish historical experience.

BIo:  Karen S. Franklin is Director of Family Research at the Leo Baeck Institute, a position she has held for over 30 years. She has served as chair of the Council of American Jewish Museums, chair of ICMEMO, the Memorial Museums Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), president of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS), and as co-chair of the Board of Governors of JewishGen. In 2019 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award of IAJGS

In 2012, she received a Service Citation from ICOM-US, the national committee of the ICOM, for her work in Nazi-era looted art restitution.

Is it the journey or the destination? Many enjoy the process and camaraderie that comes along with the act of doing genealogy research. Others have goals to answer a specific question, find a living relative, build a family tree, or publish a book. What happens when you move onto other pursuits or suddenly depart midstream before completion? End of life planning typically does not include instructions for hard-earned and meaningful genealogy research. How would loved ones or fellow landsman find and navigate your online passwords, final version of a family tree, photos, acquired documents, translations, instructions on next steps, or manuscript in process? Let's explore big picture questions about setting expectations, create a planning checklist to ensure your intentions are honored, and start organizing today for tomorrow. This lecture will encourage participants to share best practices and engage with one another.

As this program is interactive with audience participation, it is best suited to attend in person. Ellen does not allow recording to protect the sensitive information that is sometimes shared. She will allow JGSCO to stream the program live, but interaction online with the presenter will be limited.

    BIO:

Ellen Kowitt is a past president of JGS Colorado and has served in many volunteer roles throughout the genealogy world since the mid-1990s. Currently, she is Director of the JewishGen USA Research Division. In this capacity, she manages volunteers who identify projects, and format, key, and upload data into a searchable database. Ellen serves JewishGen and the broader genealogy community as an expert on records about Jews in the United States along with other beginner and advanced topics. Her primary project has been launching Shul Records America, a first-of-its kind finding aid pointing users to over 150 repositories where synagogue record collections with genealogical significance are located.

Ellen became a professional genealogist ten years ago and has published client books including America’s Alligator Family: The David Crystal Story(in 2023), From Scheinman to Simon (in 2024), and Beyond the Jaffa Gate: The Lizerbram Family Chronicle (in 2025). Ellen received a bachelor’s degree from Alfred University and spent twenty-five years working in marketing management and communications before transitioning into full-time research. She lives in Colorado with her husband and two college-age daughters. Her website is EllenKowitt.com.

We need you to continue our success!

We are so grateful for the time, skill, and heart you bring to this project. As we review our current budget and plan responsibly for the year ahead, we need to temporarily pause our practice of covering lunch expenses for volunteer researchers. Please plan on either bringing your lunch or enjoying one of the several venues right on campus.

The ongoing JGSCO volunteer project at University of Denver continues through the Spring of 2026.

Please commit to joining us for one or more Mondays from 10 am to 3 pm with a lunch break. You will be helping with mitzvah work while learning about fascinating Denver history!

The goal is to create a full index to the complete JCRS patient application collection. You will read from historical records and key primary data into a spreadsheet provided by the archive. For history about the project, visit https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/USA/JCRS.htm.

No experience or particular skills are needed. We encourge you to bring your laptop and a pair of reading glasses, and your friends are welcome too!  We will train everyone. Registration is required at
