What is the Member’s Helping Members Forum and how can you be part of it?

Answer:  You should consider participating in the Forum for getting help from other members on your genealogy research questions. Secondarily, many of our member are willing to share their genealogy knowledge for helping other members become successful as they research their family history.

There are 3 ways of participating in the forum

1.    You can visit the forum to see topics and replies.  No need to subscribe.

2.    You can subscribe to the forum and have the option for receiving email digests of when any new topics, or any replies to topics, are posted: Daily, Weekly, or Immediately.  If you don’t subscribe, you have to visit the forum to see topics and replies.

3.    You can subscribe to specific topics that interest you.  You have the option for receiving email digests of when any replies to these topics are posted: Daily, Weekly, or Immediately.  Subscribing to a topic without a digest email means you receive immediate, real-time email notifications for every single new reply or update posted to that specific thread, rather than a bundled daily or weekly summary. 

Members post genealogy topics and receive replies with guidance from members.    This new member benefit is especially valuable for members doing family research who can’t make meetings and other events due to scheduling or other reasons.

Members, even if they have not added topics, can learn relevant sources for finding the genealogy information, education, and tools to aid in answering questions they may have, or for achieving their research goals. The forum topics and replies are available to all members.  You do not have to post topics or see answers:  You can subscribe or unsubscribe to forum topics.   

Please note that members, when they reply, do not do research. Although they may use a member’s data when demonstrating a resource.

How do I find the Forum - Two locations

Answer:

If you have previously logged-in:

1.      From the Research Menu

         Research > Forum: Members Helping Members

2.      If you have forgotten your password, or need to login:

  How to Subscribe or Unsubscribe to Forum Topics

 

Answer: Select ‘Subscribe’ or ‘Unsubscribe’ to the Forum option on the top of the Forum.  When a topic has been selected, you can subscribe or unsubscribe; see images below.

Forum vs. Topic Subscriptions

• Entire Forum: Clicking "Subscribe to forum" tracks all the forum entries, sending optional digest email (Daily, Weekly, Immediately) when any topic receives a reply or when a new topic is created.  The frequency of digests is discussed below:  How to receive a digest of new topics and replies.
• Individual Topics: You can also choose to subscribe to single, specific threads if you do not want general notifications for the rest of the forum topics.

Select a forum topic and select ‘Subscribe’.  Being subscribed to the forum allows you to subscribe to the topics that interest you:

How to receive a digest of topics and replies

Answer: VIEW your Member Profile, then EDIT your Member Profile.  Select desired digest option.

 Select desired option . . . . THEN SAVE

 

How to post a topic

Answer:

1.                         Enter Subject Please review existing topics to avoid duplication.

2.                         Enter Body. You can add attachment files and images.

3.                         Subscribe to the desired digest option: Daily, Weekly, Immediate.

4.                         Create

How to edit or delete my topic or replies

Answer: Edit & Delete options are at the top right of your topic or reply.

How to reply to a topic

Answer: Top left of topic has REPLY button. Note that you can show latest replies on top, and to subscribe to the topic.

 

Are the Forum topics and replies moderated?

Answer: Posts and replies are periodically reviewed after they have been posted. Moderators may make grammar edits to clarify topics or replies. They may move, delete, add to replies, or otherwise take actions that will improve the information. If your topic or reply is moderated, you will be notified.
