Tastes Across the Centuries: Food, History

and Stories from the Jews of Spain

with Sephardic Chef Susan Barocas

Sunday June 28th

ZOOM ONLY

10 AM to 11:30 AM

No Charge

Join Chef Susan Barocas for family stories and an exploration of the roots of Sephardic food traditions and their surprising influence on foods we eat today. Over nearly 2,000 years of Jewish life in Iberia, the Judios of Spain developed their own delicious and unique cuisine. This cuisine both sustained connections to their Jewish heritage and, beginning in the 14th century, condemned them to prosecution by the Inquisition. When the Expulsion forced the Jews to  leave Spain, they took their foodways with them to safe haven and new homes in the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, the Mid East and even the Caribbean and the new world of the Americas. The  program will include a cooking demo of some iconic Sephardic dishes with recipes provided to registrants.

Writer, chef and cooking instructor Susan Barocas is passionate about healthy, reduced-waste cooking and Jewish food, especially Sephardic cuisines, cultures and history. She appeared on the 2025 PBS program “Family Recipes: Jewish American Style,” currently available with PBS Passport. Susan is co-founder/co-director of the project Savor: A Sephardic Music & Food Experience (savorexperience.com), presenting interactive programs, talks and travel adventures with a focus on Sephardic and wider Jewish history, culture and language. Founding director of the innovative Jewish Food Experience, she was honored to bring Sephardic food to the White House as the guest chef for three of President Obama’s Passover seders.  Susan grew up in Denver and is now based in Washington, DC.
