 David Fasman

Judaica Provenance: Historical Gold and Genealogical Treasures

Topic: Jews truly are, “The People of the Book.” From original incunabula and 16th century works, to prolific publishing in the Pale of Settlement, and the most extensive looting of books in the history of humankind—books have followed Jews everywhere, and to some extent, we have followed them. In this talk, Fasman will review the genealogical potential that exists in antiquarian Judaica and the reasons it can be so powerful. Additionally, Fasman will discuss the history of books orphaned by the Nazis, and the subsequent destruction of genealogical records those books held.

Bio: David Fasman is the Curator of the Beck Archives of Rocky Mountain Jewish History and Assistant Professor at the University of Denver Libraries. His research focuses on Nazi-Looted Judaica and Hebraica, the censorship of Jewish books during the Pale of Settlement, and general provenance of antiquarian Judaica. David has spoken at several conferences, multiple classes, and several groups on these topics.

Dr. Joshua Furman

“The Other Ellis Island:  Jewish Immigration Through Galveston, Texas.”

Topic:  Between 1907 and 1914, nearly 10,000 Eastern European Jews entered the United States through the port at Galveston, Texas rather than through Ellis Island.  This presentation will discuss the history of the Galveston Movement, its successes and failures, and will feature a rare primary source document:  a 1907 recruitment pamphlet, translated from Yiddish, that was distributed to encourage Jews to come to Texas and other states beyond the East Coast.

Bio:  Dr. Joshua Furman is the Jeanne Abrams Endowed Director of the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society and affiliate faculty of the Center for Judaic Studies at DU.  Prior to coming to Denver in January 2024, he worked at Rice University in Houston from 2015 to 2023, where he served as the Associate Director of the Program in Jewish Studies and the founder and first curator of the Joan and Stanford Alexander South Texas Jewish Archives. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Council on Library and Information Resources, the Southern Jewish Historical Society, the Texas Jewish Historical Society, and several foundations.
